Our Responsive Classroom
The approach to teaching I use in my classroom to build a caring community in which social and academic learning are fully integrated.
Our Class Rules Are:
1. Be ready for school. (Follow routines, hand in homework, participate, take care of yourself, etc.)
2. We are nice to our classmates.
3. Keep the classroom neat. (Put things back where you found them, draw in our sketchbook not our other books, take care of the materials so others can use them, etc.)
4. Listen to the person that is speaking. (Teachers, as well as, fellow students need our full attention.)
5. Play Safe. (Especially at recess.)
We make mistakes and break rules occasionally. In our classroom we use logical consequences. This means the consequence fits the rule-breaking.
Our 3 logical consequences are:
1. You break it, you fix it. (For example, If something rips, tape or glue it back together. If someone's feelings get hurt, fix them by saying or doing something nice.)
2. Loss of privilege. (Games were not put away after indoor recess. Results in, games can not be used for a period of time. Students working too noisily, after a warning, no taking during that work time.)
3. Apology of Action. (Sorry just is not enough sometimes. You must do something to show you are sorry. Sometimes it is as simple as spending extra time with the person who was hurt.)
